Japan Focus Distracted Microsoft, Says Former Xbox Boss

Ever since the launch of the original Xbox, Microsoft has struggled to gain a foothold in Japan, and according to former Chief Xbox Officer Robbie Bach, there wasn't much the company could have done differently to make a bigger splash in that market.

"It’s just a question of focus," Bach explained on the latest episode of IGN Unfiltered. "And it’s a question of where you have assets and where you don’t have assets. And we had no assets in Japan," he added, noting the company "didn’t have relationships with Japanese game developers" aside from "a few isolated ones" for games like Ninja Gaiden, which "were actually more popular in the West than they were in Japan."

PlayStation 3 Launch Price a 'Total Shock' to Microsoft

While Microsoft wasn't surprised by Sony's decision to release PlayStation 3 a year after Xbox 360, the announcement of the console's $599 launch price came as a "total shock" to the company, according to former Chief Xbox Officer Robbie Bach.

"The single moment when I knew we had real upside was when they announced the pricing at E3," Bach said on the latest episode of IGN Unfiltered. "We knew their bill of materials was going to be too expensive but we thought they’d suck it up."

Bach recounted their reaction to Sony's announcement at E3 2006, adding, "Kaz

said the price and the room we were in went silent and I said, 'Did he really say what I think he said?'" After getting confirmation that what they heard was indeed correct, the former Xbox exec noted that many in the room said aloud: "Oh, this could be really fun."

Destiny's Last Xbox 360 And PS3 Patch Deploys Today

Bungie has confirmed that today's patch 2.3.1.0 – which is paving the way for the next expansion, Destiny: Rise of Iron – will be the last scheduled deployment for legacy consoles - the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

The statement on the official blog reads:

"Before the launch of Destiny: Rise of Iron on September 20th, there are a few issues we are fixing. This update will also be the last scheduled deployment for Legacy Consoles, excluding emergency fixes for future game-breaking issues."

Of course we knew this was coming when Destiny: Rise of Iron was announced. Bungie revealed it would only be supporting current-gen consoles, leaving the fate of the last generation's legacy consoles in question.

Top 10 Worst Star Wars Games Ever Made

We’re counting down the top ten worst Star Wars games ever. Terrible controls, frustrating head-on crashes, pointless difficulty, and moronic mechanics make these games a stain on the name of space epics. Let’s jump right in with number ten!

I remember thinking Rebel Assault II was incredibly cool when it first came out, being blown away by the seamless fusion of full-motion video and computer-generated graphics that would undoubtedly never be topped. Of course, I was nine years old at the time. Something I remember much less fondly are the infuriatingly cumbersome vehicle controls, which are probably the only part of the game that holds up worse than the direct-to-video visuals. That said, I can't fault LucasArts for trying new thing, and if nothing else, Rebel Assault II: The Hidden Empire is one of the coolest-sounding Star Wars games. -Max Scoville

Xbox 360 Was Nearly Called Xbox 3

While Microsoft ended up naming its second console Xbox 360, the company considered other options, including Xbox 3.

"Certainly Xbox 3 was actually on the list because, well, you’ve gotta catch up," former Chief Xbox Officer Robbie Bach said on the latest episode of IGN Unfiltered. "You don’t want to be Xbox 2 compared to PlayStation 3. We actually talked about that," he added.

"You don’t want to feel like you’re a generation behind, so why not skip?" he continued, noting that "Microsoft has a long history of skipping numbers," citing the jump from Windows 8 to Windows 10 as a prime example.

Sonic, E.T. and More LEGO Dimensions Expansions Detailed

This weekend at San Diego Comic-Con, Warner Bros. shared new details on the six new expansion packs coming to LEGO Dimensions this November.

The new packs that will be available in Wave 7 include Sonic the Hedgehog, J.K. Rowling's Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Gremlins, E.T. and Adventure Time.

The Fantastic Beasts pack features six levels and new LEGO Gateway bricks to construct the Magical Congress of the United States of America, as well as a figure of the film's lead character Newt Scamander. Meanwhile, fans of Adventure Time will get a minifigure of Marceline the Vampire Queen in the new expansion based on Cartoon Network's popular show.

'Xboy' Handheld Was Considered, Says Former Xbox Exec

During the early days of Xbox, Microsoft considered competing in the portable space with a dedicated gaming handheld of its own, but ultimately scrapped the project.

Former Chief Xbox Officer Robbie Bach recently stopped by the IGN office and discussed the company's early plans for a handheld (often referred to as "Xboy") on the latest episode of IGN Unfiltered (airing next Tuesday), saying that while he doesn't remember it ever getting to the prototype stage, "there were definitely drawings."

Australian Boomers Added to NBA 2K17

In a first for the series, Australian national basketball team the Boomers will be included in NBA 2K17.

2K Games and Basketball Australia announced via press release this morning that the Australian Boomers will be the first international team to be added to the NBA 2K franchise. The Boomers join Team USA as the only non-NBA teams in the game.

“We are absolutely thrilled to be part of NBA 2K17,” said Anthony Moore, CEO of Basketball Australia. “We jumped at the chance to have our Australian Boomers in the game, and now Australian gamers can take on the world with Patty Mills, Matthew Dellavedova and Andrew Bogut together in the green and gold.”

Boomers player Patty Mills is excited about the inclusion, “It’s great to see 2K recognizing our nation’s growing impact on the sport with the inclusion of Team Australia in NBA 2K17.”

Overall Console Sales Were Down for June 2016

According to sales number released by the NPD Group, hardware sales declined by 42% over the same period last year.

In its monthly statement, the NPD Group said "Eighth-generation hardware," meaning Xbox One, PS4, and Wii U, were the "primary driver" of the decline, with sales across the 3 down by 43% over June 2015.

Sales of both hardware and software were down, something the NPD Group attributes to a lack of major title launches such as last year's Batman: Arkham Knight.

Nintendo released a statement saying sales of the 3DS were up 39%, but that increase is month-to-month, rather than year-over-year as is the case with numbers from the NPD Group. Nintendo attributes the increase to the newly discounted 2DS, which can be bought for $80.

NPD Numbers Now Include Digital Sales, June Figures Released

Overwatch was the best selling game of June 2016, according to figures released by the NPD Group.

The group, which tracks sales numbers of gaming hardware and software, has previously only included physical sales in its figures. This month marks the first in which both physical and digital sales are factored into the group's sales list.

The inclusion of digital numbers seems to have helped Grand Theft Auto V in its ranking. While the game is a mainstay of the NPD top 10 sellers, it ranks as June's second-best selling game. It's perhaps unsurprising given the fact Grand Theft Auto V has shipped 65 million copies since its release.

FIFA 17 Cover Star Announced

Following a two-week long fan vote, EA announced German soccer star Marco Reus of Borussia Dortmund will grace the cover of FIFA 17.

Reus beat out three others to earn his spot on the cover: James Rodriguez of Real Madrid C.F., Anthony Martial of Manchester United, and Eden Hazard of Chelsea FC. Over 3 million votes were cast, according to EA.

Telltale's Walking Dead: Season 3 Gets New Screens, Poster

Ahead of its debut later this year, Telltale Games has released a new poster and batch of screenshots from The Walking Dead: Season 3.

The poster pays tribute to the original art for The Walking Dead when the series was first shown back in 2011 at San Diego Comic-Con.

The studio will discuss later this summer how fans can get a copy of the limited edition poster, so stay tuned for additional details on that front.

The Walking Dead: Season 3 will feature a brand-new character who's never appeared in the comics or Telltale's game series. His name is named Javier and he'll be playable in addition to Clementine. For more on Telltale Games' upcoming third season ahead of its launch later this year, check out its E3 2016 reveal trailer below.

“Deadly Premonition... in Britain” – Swery Has Written a Book

Iconic Japanese game designer Swery – of Deadly Premonition fame – has been on sabbatical from the games industry since November last year. He’s been on extended sick leave, recovering from reactive hypoglycemia. IGN Japan caught up with him at the recent BitSummit in Kyoto, and what he’s been up to may surprise you.

“I am currently away from work on sick leave, and in my private time I am writing a novel,” he says. “The first reason is that I suddenly had time on my hands, but the next reason is that I was saddened by the death of my cat and I wanted to find a form to express my sadness. So I started writing a book that stars a cat. In a British countryside town, there is a murder case, and a mystery unfolds that is written from the perspective of the cat. It’s like a version of Deadly Premonition but set in Britain. In Deadly Premonition, a protagonist from the city comes to a rural town and experiences being a fish out of water. In my novel, with the British countryside town, the people within the town are all very close, but by making the protagonist something other than human, that creates a filter to keep the reader a step removed.

Telltale's Minecraft Episode 7 Release Date Announced

Telltale Games has announced the seventh episode in its Minecraft series will be available beginning July 26.

Episode 7 is called Access Denied, and will feature Jesse and friends in a land controlled by PAMA, a "thinking machine" which wants to control everyone to achieve optimal efficiency.

PAMA's creator, Harper, will be voiced by Community's Yvette Nicole Brown.

Access Denied is part of the $15 Adventure Pass, which includes access to Episodes 6, 7, and 8. Alternatively, players can pick up Episode 7 digitally by itself for $5. Whichever you choose, you'll need to make sure you own the very first episode in the Minecraft series in order to purchase and play.

Tomb Raider's New Modes Feel Like Dark Souls, Gone Home

The year-long wait PS4 owners have had to endure for Rise of the Tomb Raider is finally nearing its end. On October 11, the game will hit Sony's console in the form of the 20 Year Celebration edition. This includes all of the previously-released DLC, plus a trio of brand new modes that all seem super cool.

We got a chance to visit Crystal Dynamics and spend a day with the game on PlayStation 4. Here’s what we thought.

Marty Sliva: While Endurance Mode certainly isn’t anything new to Rise of the Tomb Raider, the 20th anniversary edition introduces co-op to the tough-as-nails survival mode. Two players try to survive for as long as they can out in the wild as they forage for materials, raid tombs, battle the elements, and fight entire terrifying bears. At any point, players are able to end the mode and extract themselves from the wilderness, which gives them all of the rewards they stumbled upon during the session. However, if both players die before they can extract, they lose everything. In that way, it’s a bit like Dark Souls.

There are a few dozen Dead Rising Trophies listed on the Exophase website under the PS4 listing. There hasn't been any official word on a remaster yet, but we'll be sure to update you once we hear something.

The original Dead Rising came out on Xbox 360 in 2006. It never made it to PlayStation, and nor did the third game in the franchise, but Dead Rising 2 did come to Sony's platform.

At E3 this year, Capcom and Microsoft unveiled Dead Rising 4, which will be a timed-exclusive for Xbox One and PC.

FIFA Update Addresses Ultimate Team Chemistry Issues

A patch is available for FIFA 16 on PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 3, with one for Xbox 360 coming soon.

The patch is in relation to the FIFA Ultimate Team chemistry inconsistencies which EA said it would be investigating last month. Chemistry is essentially a measure of how well teammates can play with each other.

A description of the problem earlier this month stated "there appear to be some differences in how fitness and chemistry apply to some FUT items." Yesterday's post simply says "this update addresses inconsistencies in chemistry and fitness on some FUT items."

Warner Bros. Hit With Ruling for Buying YouTube Coverage

Warner Bros. has settled Federal Trade Commission charges that it did not adequately disclose money paid to YouTubers for positive Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor coverage.

The FTC says Warner Bros. paid online "influencers," including PewDiePie, "from hundreds to tens of thousands of dollars" to post positive videos on YouTube and social media.

Sponsored videos during the campaign were viewed over 5.5 million times, and Warner Bros. apparently told the influencers how to promote the game and not to disclose any bugs or glitches.

SGDQ Speedrun Marathon Earns $1.2 Million for Charity

This year’s Summer Games Done Quick has come to a close, bringing in a grand total of more than $1.295 million, including proceeds from a special Humble Bundle offered throughout the show.

The money was raised to benefit charity Doctors Without Borders and tops the $1.23 million raised during SGDQ 2015 as well as the $1.2 million raised during AGDQ 2016 earlier this year.

Amazon Prime Day 2016 is officially happening on July 12th. In case you didn’t know, Prime Day is twenty-four hours of Black Friday deal hunting in the middle of the summer.

Now, I won’t lie like last year’s Amazon Prime Day was totally amazing. Among the good deals on Amazon’s own gear like the Echo and the Fire TV, bonus credit with gift card purchases, and super cheap used games and refurbished hardware, there was a ton of, well, less than compelling items up for grabs. New GTA Online Expansion's Release Date Announced

Rockstar has revealed the next expansion for GTA Online, Cunning Stunts and set a release date of Tuesday, July 12.

The expansion turns swathes of the game's multiplayer world into a fantasy racing game akin to Trackmania, complete with boosts, loop-the-loops, enormous stunt jumps and, seemingly, massive bowling skittles to smash over. You can watch the reveal trailer below:

New Stunt Races will add the aforementioned surreal elements to the landscape, and each one will be matched to a specific type of vehicle, keeping everyone on a level playing field (metaphorically speaking - these actual playing fields are bumpy as hell).

According to Rockstar Newswire, Cunning Stunts also offers new vehicles in the form of "new Super cars, Sports cars and Motorbikes". There will be racing-themed cosmetics to match, too, with "appropriately tatted and dressed drivers, sporting new motocross gear, racing suits, helmets and host of other additions."

Red Dead Redemption Xbox 360 Sales up 6000 Percent

Sales of Red Dead Redemption have jumped over 6000 percent following confirmation it will be playable on Xbox One via backwards compatibility.

According to Amazon.co.uk (thanks, VG24/7), sales of both the original 2010 game and the Game of the Year edition have been boosted by yesterday's confirmation the game is coming to Xbox One this Friday, July 8, 2016.

Footage of Call of Duty: Roman Wars Reportedly Emerges

Call of Duty could have gone in a very different direction a few years ago, as footage of a Roman-inspired take on Activision's popular franchise has reportedly surfaced.

GamesRadar got ahold of some footage of an early build of the game, titled Call of Duty: Roman Wars. According to the outlet, Activision was looking to experiment with the series back in 2008, and was taking pitches from various developers. At that time, Skylanders and Guitar Hero developer Vicarious Visions started work on Roman Wars, which centered around Julius Caesar's tenth legion.

The game would have featured both first and third-person gameplay, where players would take on various roles, including officers, archers and grunts. Additionally, Roman Wars would have been similar in tone to films like 300 and Gladiator and taken place across a wide variety of locales, including the sea, the plains and the forest.

Red Dead Redemption to Become Backward Compatible on Xbox One This Friday

Rockstar Games has announced that Red Dead Redemption will become officially backward compatible on the Xbox One this Friday, July 8.

Xbox 360 Red Dead owners will be able to play the game on Xbox One no matter the version of the game they owned — the original Red Dead Redemption, Undead Nightmare, or the Game of the Year edition — while those who didn't can purchase the game on Xbox One beginning Friday.

The 2010 game was leaked as a possible backward compatible title earlier this year. Access to the game was later removed, however, with Larry Hyrb noting that the game was made available for a brief window due to a testing error.

Microsoft Adding Wheelchair Option for Xbox Avatars

Microsoft will add a wheelchair option for its Xbox avatars, Xbox head Phil Spencer announced over the weekend.

Responding to a fan on Twitter, Spencer wrote that no petition was needed to persuade Microsoft to add a wheelchair option for avatars — it's something the team is already working on, and the feature is "not far off." Today, platform head Mike Ybarra chimed in with a preview.
